How we treat car accident injuries
Treatment is built around your assessment and the goals in your treatment plan. It usually combines:
- Manual therapy. Joint mobilization and soft tissue techniques to ease pain and restore movement.
- McKenzie method. Specific movements and positions for neck and back pain, which also teach you how to manage flare-ups yourself.
- Exercise therapy. Progressive strengthening and mobility work to rebuild what the injury took away.
- Traction. Cervical and lumbar traction, used when it suits your condition.
- Pain relief. TENS, interferential current (IFC) and ultrasound, used alongside exercise.
- Acupuncture. Available with Xuemin (Simon) Li, R.TCM.P., if you would like to add it to your care.
- Return to work and driving. A plan for getting back to work, driving and your normal activities.
When to seek urgent care: go to the emergency department or call 911 after an accident if you have a severe or worsening headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness, new numbness or weakness, or severe neck pain.
Car accident physiotherapy: common questions
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. In Ontario you can see a physiotherapist directly after a car accident. You do not need a referral to start an accident benefits claim for physiotherapy.
Do I have to pay anything?
We bill your auto insurer directly for treatment it approves, so you do not pay up front. If anything is not covered, we will tell you before treatment.
Does it matter who was at fault?
No. In Ontario, accident benefits for medical and rehabilitation treatment are paid by your own auto insurer regardless of who caused the accident.
Do I need to use my work health benefits first?
Under Ontario rules that took effect July 1, 2026, auto insurance generally pays first for medical and rehabilitation treatment. We will confirm what applies to your claim.
I was in an accident while working. Can you help?
Yes. If you were driving for work, your claim may go through WSIB instead. We are registered with WSIB and bill them directly as well.
What should I bring?
Your auto insurance claim number, your adjuster's name and contact details, your policy information, and any hospital or doctor's reports.
